Climate Change Risks to Freshwater Subsistence Fisheries in Arctic Alaska: Insights and Uncertainty from Broad Whitefish Coregonus nasus

چکیده
Arctic freshwater ecosystems and fish populations are largely shaped by seasonal long-term watershed hydrology. In this paper, we hypothesize how changing air temperature precipitation will alter freeze thaw processes, hydrology, instream habitat to assess potential indirect effects, such as the change foraging behavioral ecology, on fishes, using Broad Whitefish Coregonus nasus an indicator species. Climate is expected continue hydrologic pathways, flow regimes and, therefore, suitability, connectivity, availability for fishes. Warming lengthening of growing season likely increase growth rates; however, exceedance threshold stream temperatures physiological stress life histories. We expect these changes have mixed effects subsistence fishes fisheries. Long-term uncertain, so filling scientific knowledge gaps, identifying important habitats or increasing abiotic variables in priority watersheds, key understanding potentially mitigating impacts a rapidly landscape.

Total Environment of Change: Impacts of Climate Change and Social Transitions on Subsistence Fisheries in Northwest Alaska
Arctic ecosystems are undergoing rapid changes as a result of global climate change, with significant implications for the livelihoods of Arctic peoples. In this paper, based on ethnographic research conducted with the Iñupiaq communities of Noatak and Selawik in northwestern Alaska, we detail prominent environmental changes observed over the past twenty to thirty years and their impacts on sub...

متن کاملClimigration? Population and climate change in Arctic Alaska
Residents of towns and villages in Arctic Alaska live on "the front line of climate change." Some communities face immediate threats from erosion and flooding associated with thawing permafrost, increasing river flows, and reduced sea ice protection of shorelines. The term climigration, referring to migration caused by climate change, originally was coined for these places. Although initial app...
متن کاملExtinction risks from climate change: macroecological and historical insights
Human-induced climate change may threaten a large proportion of Earth's biota, but the uncertainties involved in projecting the future geographical distributions of species make quantitative predictions of extinction risk difficult to make. I discuss how insight from recent advances in macroecology and knowledge about species responses to past climate change can help predict extinction risks mo...
متن کاملUncertainty in climate change impacts on basin - scale freshwater resources
This paper presents a preface to this Special Issue on the results of the QUEST-GSI (Global Scale Impacts) project on climate change impacts on catchment scale water resources. A detailed description of the unified methodology, subsequently used in all studies in this issue, is provided. The project method involved running simulations of catchmentscale hydrology using a unified set of past and ...
